What laptop is best for online trading and general business?

June 8, 2010 - 9:58 pm 3 Comments

I have been told a Mac is good, how well does it work with Microsoft Vista?

Vista won’t work on a Mac! I’m not keen on Apple Macs – suitable for publishing – but for general business a PC with XP is better. I don’t like Vista either! I have a HP Pavilion with a wireless router – and a oldish desktop on the network – in case this goes wrong. It has 1 gig of RAM and a 100 Gb hard drive – although all the software was preinstalled and most of it like MS Works was garbage. You really need something like this with MS Office.

Best online trading account for mutual funds investment (SIP)…?

June 8, 2010 - 9:58 pm 3 Comments

I am interested in mutual funds investment through SIP. I have hdfc trading account. But I am not satisfied with their service because they dont have SBI, UTI mutual funds. Also they have SIP in Hdfc and DSP ML mutual funds only.

So I am looking for Sharekhan or Jeojit, anyone doing investment through these account please help me.

I am confused about selecting good online trading account.

I have personal experience with ICICIDirect, HDFC Securities and Motilal Oswal. Apart from direct stock investment I also do a fair bit of mutual fund SIP investments. I don’t trade/invest on a daily basis and am a long term investor. So for me brokerage rates don’t matter much.

For me what matters are the following:
1. Reliability of the platform -I can transact when I want
2. Correctness in transaction records, account debits, demat credits, shortfall management
3. User-friendliness of interface – you can find what you want quickly
4. Promptness of customer helpdesk in replying to emails
5. Ability to do everything from one single place – like demat account, MF account, trading account, and bank account are all managed by the same entity, so there is single place of accountability

Given all these in my experience ICICIDirect still scores the best. It has the highest no of subscribers. It used to have some transaction problems earlier, but over the past year, I cannot recollect instances where I couldn’t execute a buy/sell when I wanted it. (HDFC Securities & Motilal OSwal both have miles to go on this front, systems cant keep up with the load on exceptionally high traffic days -e.g. jan 22/23 2008). Their User interface is the best, you can locate what to do and where very fast, almost intuitively. Their transaction records are impeccable, you have peace of mind. Couldn’t say the same for Motilal Oswal (I had to track and remind them to make good the shortfall when I bought and paid for 20 shares of Wyeth Pharma but demat was only for 16 after a week). And single place of accountability makes sure i deal with the same party and can get things resolved faster.

No matter what arguments you hear against, perhaps the biggest argument in favour of ICICIDirect is that they have been operating these services from 1999. That’s close to a decade of experience in handling extremes of load, variety of software and technical issues, customer complaints , and have matured over the years.

The others may give you cheaper brokerage rates (and that matters if you are a day trader) but have much more to cover before they can reach similar levels of maturity as a service provider.

If you are looking at only online Mutual Fund investing, even Citibank Investment account is great. I have used for over 3 years and been very very satisfied with their MF investing platform. They dont provide stock investing facilities.

My 2 cents. Hope they were useful & happy investing!

What is the best online stock trading platform for beginners?

I am just now looking to invest some money in some penny stocks and such. Nothing serious, just a couple hundred bucks or so….just to learn how it works and get started. Which platform should I use with regard to making LOW DOLLAR AMOUNT TRADES… Scottrade, etrade, ING, forex, etc….
When I say low dollar amount, I mean around $200.00 per transaction…that seems like a good dollar amount I can learn the ropes with.

I think this site, sogotrade is pretty decent, $3 per trade, and gets 100 free trades.

good luck my fd.

What is the best online stock-trading company?

I had a really bad experience with E-Trade. What is a company that you can trust with your money, that doesn’t have any hidden fees, including maintenance fees, and has a relatively low price per trade?
E-Trade "lost" $1000 of my money before I was able to buy a single share of stock from them. My grievance with them is very legitimate.

I like Charles Schwab. Clean, no mistakes, inexpensive. There are a few that are a little bit cheaper per trade, but the small savings is not worth the worry to me. I am impressed by the level of training of their personnel. Whenever I need to talk with someone, whoever answers the phone always knows all the answers. No "let me put you on hold" or "I’ll have to transfer you elsewhere". They all just know it all. And, no offshore.

Best online trading site for me?

I’m looking for an online trading site where I can make some investments without paying too much. I basically want to do bonds and mutual funds, so I don’t need something that’s going to let me trade like 50 times per day…what’s the best one for just bonds/mutual funds, and maybe some low risk stocks?

Also, one that you don’t need a lot to invest with, I’m a poor college student so I have less than $10,000 to invest.

zecco.com is the best for commissions. I use them and have no problems.

I’m looking to start trading some of my stock online because of the convenience. I want to know what is the best site. I want cheap trades, ease of use, and just a little advice. Let me hear what you think.

Best bet for new investors;
Charles Schwab or Fidelity Investments.

If you want cheap trades with mediocre tools and some support;
Scottrade

If you want cheap trades with great support & great tools;
ThinkOrSwim
(Only if you’ve got 3-5 years of very active trading experiance, not geared to the novice).

I’d like to learn how to trade US stocks before I jump into the real stock market. I heard that there are some good online fantasy stock trading website where I can trade stocks virtually, and get some prize as well. It would be great if you guys let me know what’s the best now.

I recently ran into a website called http://zoodak.com. It offers free/paid contests and other exciting features. Very easy to use. The only problem is it’s addicting..
