Can I issue a stock report/analysis?

June 8, 2010 - 3:54 am 1 Comment

Companies often issue reports or analysis on various stocks. These reports basically say the companies suggestion of whether or not someone should buy the stock and why.

I know it is illegal to offer/charge for investment advice without special licenses – but could one sell a a publication consisting of several pages of stock reports? The sale would be of the analysis… not a comission type thing or anything like that. Are there any blatant laws prohibiting this?

Thanks!

In order to publish and sell analyst reports you will need to pass the Registered Research Analyst Exam, NASD Series 86 + 87. Contact FINRA.

How to find the beta of each stock using regression analysis. (given 10 stock prices and the S&P as a base)?

June 8, 2010 - 3:54 am 2 Comments

I am working on a project where I look at 4 different stocks using the monday closing price for 10 weeks in a row. I need to find the beta for each stock using the S&P data as the independent variable. I just can not seem to come up with anything on this one. All I can find online is the listed beta’s for the stocks but they must be from a specific time frame so none of them will work.

Here is how Wikipedia says to calculate your beta.

Calculation of Beta
To calculate Beta, one needs a list of returns for the asset and returns for the index; these returns can be daily, weekly or any period. Next, a plot should be made, with the index returns on the x-axis and the asset returns on the y-axis, in order to check that there are no serious violations of the linear regression model assumptions. The slope of the fitted line from the linear least-squares calculation is Beta. The y-intercept is the alpha.

Go to the library to the information desk and ask if they have any information on your subject.

What kind of research services (stock reports and analysis, etc) do various discount brokers offer?

June 8, 2010 - 3:52 am 1 Comment

I currently use Firstrade. They offer stock reports from Standard and Poor’s. I was wondering what kind of research other brokers (like Scottrade, TradeKing, Zecco, Etrade, TD Ameritrade, Schwab, etc.) offer.

Im w Schwab, they have a number of research reports/services S&P, Argus, GS, etc available. Check out their website to take a look.
