Human Error Causes Stock Market Plunge!

June 8, 2010 - 9:52 pm 11 Comments

Today a trader made a ‘error’ and caused the stock market to plunge. The news said the trader mistyped and submitting a sell order for shares in the Billions instead of the Millions. But I think there is another agenda here.
Either way heaps of people would have made alot of money today. Our dollar went down about 4 cents too. Here is the news article to read http://www.news.com.au/business/human-error-behind-huge-dow-jones-share-market-plunge/story-e6frfm1i-1225863396968

What’s the difference between owning a share of stock & a share of mutual fund?

June 8, 2010 - 3:03 am 3 Comments

(remember to address both parts of the question, the part about a stock and the part about mutual fund.)

When you own shares of an individual stock you are, in effect, a direct owner of that company. You have a say, however small, in the management via your right to vote on issues related to the company. By owning a stock you also assume the risks associated with that one company. For example, if that company goes bankrupt or has individual issues, you can lose all your investment based on one company. When you own a share of a mutual fund, you are pooled together with other investors and mutually benefit (potentially) from a professional manager selecting many stocks that you own together. This can help diversify the stock holdings and reduce the risk associated with individual stock ownership. There are also cost differences associated with each type of investment that should be considered—commissions for trading stocks and management fees for mutual funds—while tax considerations may also need to be considered as the rules for each type of investment are different.

How do I calculate the per share cost basis of a stock?

June 8, 2010 - 2:52 am 1 Comment

You just got a dividend of 30 shares of preferred stock on your XYZ common stock. You had purchased 200 shares of XYZ stock for $12,000. On the date of dividend, the market value of the common stock was $75 per share and the market value for the preferred was $100 per share. What is the new per share cost basis of the XYZ common stock?

Your cost befor dividend is 60/share of USD12,000. Assuming that you sold all pref shares on date of dividend, the value of each common share comes down by (30*75)/200 i.e 11.25. So the new cost basis for common stock is USD 48.75

How can I get share/stock prices for my website?

June 8, 2010 - 2:52 am 2 Comments

I m doing a virtual stock trading project which requires me to get latest (or fairly recent / delayed) stock prices. I will be stimulating graphs using the prices etc. XML format would be prefered.

this works for me using asp.net

public string[] GetQuote(string symbol)
{
string strAll;

string[] strAllArray;

try
{
string fullpath=@"http://quote.yahoo.com/d/quotes.csv?s=" + symbol + "&f=snl1d1t1c1ohgv&e=.csv";
HttpWebRequest webreq = (HttpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create(fullpath);
HttpWebResponse webresp = (HttpWebResponse)webreq.GetResponse();
StreamReader strm = new StreamReader(webresp.GetResponseStream(),Encoding.ASCII);
strAll = strm.ReadLine();
strm.Close();

strAll = strAll.Replace( "\"", "" );
strAllArray = strAll.Split( new char[] {‘,’} );

}
catch(Exception)
{
strAllArray = null;
}
return strAllArray;
}

Is it a good idea to buy 1 share of many kinds of stock?

June 8, 2010 - 2:52 am 6 Comments

Especially those that have dividends so the dividends can be used to buy more stock of the same company? I head some lady became a multi millionare by only buying 3 shares of stock and the dividends ended up making her rich.

Or should I buy at least 10 shares, I have very limited funds for investing in stocks.

Bad idea. The brokerage fees will kill you. If you have "very limited funds", you should NOT be investing in stocks. Save up your money and then open a mutual fund account with Vanguard, T. Rowe Price, etc. You can add to that without fees.
